The Appenzell of my Itinerary's Eye

The dramatic rise and fall of Swiss high country is breathtaking, but my happy place was cow country, in the far northeast. We stayed in Appenzell, which was a bit touristy but right in the middle of where we wanted to be.

We woke to the sweet smell of hay drifting in through open windows on a soft, mountain-chilled breeze and drove through the countryside with silken, fawn-colored bovines grazing their way across steep emerald hills on either side of us.

I love the amenities of and pay rent in the city, but the country is where my heart resides.

Until we meet again, dearest Schweiz.
